Notes Regarding the use of the above table:

  1. Useable image area is approximately ½” smaller than nominal size. For example, a nominal 4x5” has a usable image area of 3 ½ x 4 ½.” To output a full 4x5,” we must output as a 5x7.”
  2. Outputs at 508/20 (ppi/ppm) are well suited for contact printing.
  3. LVT negative outputs at 1016/40 (ppi/ppm) allow enlargement up to 3X.
  4. LVT negative outputs at 2032/80 (ppi/ppm) allow enlargement up to 6X.
  5. LVT negative outputs at 3048/120 (ppi/ppm) allow enlargement up to 10X
  6. If at all possible, scans must be made at or above the desired output resolution.
  7. Your image on screen should look as you would have it look in your final print.
  8. Make sure your monitor is calibrated and that your ambient light conditions are not too bright. For black and white work, using the NARA Monitor Adjustment Target will suffice. <http://www.archives.gov/research/arc/adjust-monitor.html>
  9. Be careful not to over sharpen your files.
  10. Files may be sent to us on CD/DVD, or uploaded via FTP. For FTP uploading instructions, <click here>.
  11. To save disk space or to allow faster uploads, files should be delivered in 8 bit, grayscale.
  12. Files must be TIFF format.
