Digital to Film Outputs (LVT Negative and Positive Film)

The Chicago Albumen Works offers photographers and institutions the ability to convert digital files to traditional, archivally processed, silver halide film, using LVT film recorders. LVT film recorders manufactured first by Kodak, and later by Durst/Dice, were the pinnacle of large format film recorder technology. We have three LVT film recorders and can produce LVT negative and positive film outputs up to 8x10” at 3048 ppi and up to 16x20” at 2032 ppi.

Our digital to film services are used by:

Photographers who want contact negatives for use with a specific printing medium.
Photographers who need to repair blemishes on their negatives.
Photographers who engage in extensive image manipulation.
Photographers who shoot digital, but need traditional film negatives.

Institutions that want a secure, archival, human readable version of their digital assets.
Institutions that are scanning for access, but still print from traditional film.

It may seem counter intuitive to convert digital files to LVT negatives, but not only do we do it for photographs, it is being done on corporate document servers (digital to microfilm) and in Hollywood (digital to tri-color separation negative). The LVT negative film outputs that an institution receives will, in effect, have two lives - first as a working negative, and second, when traditional printing papers vanish altogether, as a long-term preservation object.

  • Films used for LVT negatives are traditional silver halide films such as Kodak T-Max 100 and Ilford FP-4+.
  • Films are archivally processed, and our processing lines are regularly tested for consistency and residual hypo using methylene blue testing by an outside lab.
  • LVT negatives are truly continuous tone. They show no pixels, raster lines, or stochastic patterns.
  • All files receive a selected output curve prior to exposure. These custom curves allow the LVT to produce negatives that will print to a selected media. The intent is to bridge and match the screen image to the final print image.
  • All LVT films are processed to a density range appropriate to the printing material that will be used.
  • LVT negative prints quickly because it can have low minimum densities. However, due to the nature of the LVT software, there is no loss of shadow contrast such as one associates with traditional negatives.
  • We can work from your digital files or ours. We can even scan for you, deliver to you the file for editing, and produce LVT negative when we get it back.
  • Files may be sent to us on CD or DVD, via FTP <Click here for instructions>, or for large institutional projects, on a hard drive.
