Digital Imaging Services

Digital files and prints are now an integral part of many institutions preservation programs. On- screen access and digital reference prints can vastly reduce an institution's need to retrieve original materials, allowing far less handling and even providing the opportunity to place collections in true archival storage environments. We provide digital imaging services in the following areas:

Digital-to-Archival Film Output via LVT Film Recorder (LVT Negative and Positive Film Outputs)

High-Quality Archival Scanning and Optical Image Capture

Scanning of Recovered Acetate Image Pellicle

Recovery of Faded Color Transparencies
Archival Ink Jet Prints

Digital-to-Archival Film Output via LVT Film Recorder

LVT, or, Light Valve Technology offers a unique option for the preservation of historical negative collections. The ability to output to continuous tone film with accurate tonal reproduction allows for the marriage between the capabilities of digital imaging and traditional silver halide technology. Whether it be the ability to reconstruct faded color transparencies, output a film from a deteriorated acetate pellicle, reconstruct a damaged negative, or simply to output with accurate tonal reproduction a historical negative to the standards we have traditionally adhered to, LVT offers a range of options and versatility for historical collections.

Digital Imaging Services at CAW

Digital imaging services can be found nearly everywhere, but truly, the devil is in the details. It is the attention to detail and quality that marks CAW’s digital laboratory.

Institutional archiving is more than making files suitable for on-screen access; the preservation benefit of digitizing resides squarely in the fact than original negatives and photographs can remain in secure storage. But for this benefit to be fully realized, in addition to digitizing for current needs, one must look to the future and to the past.

In addition, having these imaging services provided at the Chicago Albumen Works assures an institution that their original photographic materials will be handled in a professional conservation environment. In the past, our experience and dedication to vintage media printing informed and tuned the quality of our negative duplication services. Just so now, in the arena of digitized images, our commitments to image quality, longevity, and a client's needs inform the digital imaging services we provide.
